Spotlight on Mary Ann
As a retired Nurse Practitioner, Mary Ann has always made the well-being of other people a priority.
Congratulations to Mary Ann Foley-Mayer, April 2026 Tutor of the Month!
LVSC Journey: I became a volunteer in April 2025. During the past year I have worked with two students, the first one for six months. I’ve been working with my second student since January.
What motivated you to become an LVSC volunteer? I wanted to be an ESL tutor for some time but had to wait until retirement to have the time to commit to tutoring. I like teaching and want to help people from other cultures learn English.
Memorable LVSC Moment: I feel personally satisfied after every session with my student. We laugh and converse and we can both see her progress. A memorable moment was when my first student and I were asked to speak to a group of new tutors. I was so proud of the way my student faced the challenge and spoke to the group. That student has since graduated from the program after six months of tutoring.
Day Job: I am a retired Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I spent 50 years working as a nurse caring for patients and teaching nurses and medical staff.
Hobbies: Travel, dancing, and family activities with my husband, Brad, and our dog Jake.
Favorite Quote: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” - attributed to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, French philosopher and Jesuit priest.
Favorite Food: Seafood
Favorite Book: I love reading historical fiction and The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran.
R&R Spot: Florida in our 5th wheel camper.
