Spotlight on Julie

"As we shared our experiences, the relationship my student and I shared grew into a friendship."

LVSC Journey: After I retired from 20 years of teaching, I was interested in doing something with my time that would contribute to the local community.  As a reading specialist with a lifelong love of literacy and language, I thought tutoring adults in ESL would be gratifying and challenging. I became an LVSC volunteer in 2017.

Memorable LVSC Moment: It was very satisfying that my experience teaching elementary students coincided perfectly with my student’s need to understand her children’s educational experiences and to communicate with their teachers.  As we continued to meet on FaceTime during Covid and shared our experiences, the relationship my student and I shared grew into a friendship.

Day Job:  Presently I am busy with my new job as “Gramma.”  I am currently devoting three days a week to babysitting my grandchildren.

Hobbies: My first love is reading.  I read mostly current literature and some classics.  Since I retired, I have been doing research into my family history with help from ancestry.com.  I love traveling.  Our family has visited many of the wonderful national parks, and my husband and I have traveled in Europe several times.

Favorite Book: That’s a hard one.  My favorite genre is historical fiction.  I also enjoy reading nonfiction, mostly dealing with American history.

R&R Spot: My husband and I own a bungalow in Manasquan and we enjoy time on the beach and swimming in the ocean.  Other than that, I love my own yard!
